Crisis-hit Taiwan, UAE post high OFW displacement | ABS-CBN News Online Beta: "Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates have the most number of overseas Filipino workers displaced by the global economic crisis, while South Korea had the most number of companies with OFW employees affected.
The latest report by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), as of September 30 last year, showed that about 4,428 OFWs from Taiwan were displaced nearly a year after the United States declared its economy in recession.
There is no updated government report, ending December 31, on the country sources of displaced OFWs.
Eleven months after economists pointed to 2 successive quarters of negative growth in the US, some 1,357 OFWs in the UAE were reported displaced.
The OFWs from Taiwan came from 93 companies of that country’s electronics, metal workers, and semi-conductor industries, the POEA report bared.
The report cited this was due to the filing for bankruptcy of these companies and retrenchment of workers.
Majority of the displaced OFWs from Taiwan (4,251) returned to the Philippines, the POEA reported."
